From an old, private collection in Philadelphia -- comprised mainly of seafaring relics. This collection contained naval items that were U.S. in origin and clearly date back to the Revolutionary period. But an old list says the Islamic items were taken as trophies in the Barbary Wars (1804-1807). Some are shown as background for the knife -- which is now for sale.The Barbary Wars were fought off the coast of Africa - w Islamic pirates from several Arab "states" raided American ships and pressed the U.S. sailors into slavery. It was one of the most colorful wars in U.S. history, and Stephen Decatur became a national hero because of it. It is w "...to the shores of Tripoli." originated to describe combat by United States Marines. Mother-of-Pearl Anchor This weapon is 15" overall -- w/ a 10.5" blade which is 1 3/4" wide. It is incribed on both sides w/ various hallmarks -- and passages from the Koran on the reseverse. (We are told that it refers to the fighter's mother.) The hardwood handle is silver mounted. It has a pommel and base w/ very fine fillagre work. The handle is wrapped w/ two kinds of very fine wire -- which is all in place. (See photo.)
