SIZE: Painting - 5.75" x 10.75" (14.6 cm x 27.3 cm)Frame - 9.5" x 14.5" (24.1 cm x 36.8 cm) Marco Grubas is very well-known for his Venetian views, painted during the late 19th century, and no doubt sold to 'Grand Tour' visitors to Venice. This painting is a typical small example of his work.It is a view looking down one of the narrow Venetian canals with a Gondolier steering his boat as it comes toward the viewer. The gondola is the the center of interest in the composition, however the eye quickly moves back to the bridge in the background and the fine architectural details of the buildings on either side and the bridge high over the canal that the boat has just gone under. The painting is beautifully composed and the details are finely painted with thick oil paints covering the surface of the wood panel support. Grubas has used impasto to good effect with dimensional brushwork throughout. read more
