Muller collection Hiroshige's Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces- Hiroshige's fantastic 60-odd Provinces series was designed in the early 1850's and represents a further evolution of his landscape design style, including some of his most modern designs. The most striking new feature of this beautiful series was the vertical format. Until then landscape prints were done in the horizontal format. This unique approach allowed Hiroshige to experiment with the foreground and background contrasts that are typical of his work. The aim of the series was to illustrate the wide variety of places all over Japan . Thus, a print from each of the provinces. From the more urban centers to the beautiful rural landscape of the provinces more far away, the series is a set of beautiful illustrations of Edo period Japan .This beautiful group of 60 odd Province prints is from a limited edition series. Only 300 sets were produced, this series was number 267 out of 300. We've included a scan of the publisher's seal below (see photo). Lovely Hiroshige landscape print with fine color and excellent detail. Artist & Signature- Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Size- 7" x 10 1/2" + margins as shown Provenance and our guarantee- Robert O. Muller collection, collected by Muller in Japan in the 1930's. Each print sold with certificate of authenticity from Fuji Arts (noting Muller collection provenance). Condition- Excellent unless otherwise noted. Muller was known as a first rate conservator and took exquisite care when storing his prints. These woodblocks are clearly old prints showing the markers of paper that is 70 years old with the wonderful sense of an old print. The Robert O. Muller Collection for Japanese art enthusiasts- Robert Muller is regarded by curators, collectors and scholars as the individual who compiled the finest collection of 20th century Japanese woodblock prints in the world. After his death in April of 2003, 4000 Japanese woodblock prints were donated to the Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian. Other parts of his collection were sold. Muller's collection was the major source of prints for several books on Japanese woodblocks and his prints were exhibited all over the world.
