Ready to add to your growing collection of quality stoneware is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar made and stamped by J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT. This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who ran the family pottery from 1850-1859 and produced some of the most remarkable decorations in all of American stoneware manufacture. This beauty demonstrates this skill. It features a clear maker's mark and a Superb Large Floral Bouquet in an Urn. This is a rare decoration that only the Norton's could execute so well. The decoration is done with slip cup and is very detailed. T are leaves, tendrils, and one large blossom-- all in a Fancy Urn. The decoration is almost three-dimensional. The cobalt is shiny or, as some call it, "Benny Blue." Stands 11.5" tall. Excellent Condition . Some wear and minor nibbles around the inner rim w a lid sat. Some light hard water stainingg inside. A professional touchup to a small abrasion on the front surface of the rim by the left ear (closeup). That's it! No hairlines, cracks, or stains. A J. and E.
