W J Gordy Blue Candle Holder Southern Folk Art Georgia Art Pottery #1 About the itemThis is a candle holder by Gordy, dated 1992 - the year before his passing, with a mixed blue glaze. This piece came from a Georgia estate, its past owner was a lover and avid collector of various Georgia folk art pottery; she kept a photo album of all the pieces she bought, also in it were photos of W.J. Gordy that she'd taken of him at his studio making vases and chatting with customers. Gordy was one of the first potters in Georgia to go from making standard utilitarian pieces to artistic pieces. Though most of his pottery is functional, it is also beautiful enough to be displayed as art. It's said that even Cornelius Vanderbilt and Sir John Wedgwood visited him in his studio and purchased pieces from him. Gordy is not only known for his signature styles, but also his unique blends of clay and glazes (he developed the first copper reds in Georgia as well as pastels including yellow, pink, orange, and blue). W.J. Gordy was a true and dedicated artist, he hand dug most of the clay he used up into the 1970's, and continued making pottery up until 1993 when he sadly passed away.Baked Clay Stamp: Earliest to Latest Gordy Marks1.
