³ JAMES HALL ~ REVERED AMERICAN PALEONTOLOGIST. Uncommon Autograph Letter Signed “James Hall,” 1 page, 8vo [8-1/4 in. x 5-3/16 in.], Albany , December 15, 1854. Writing to an unnamed fellow paleontologist, Hall generously relates: “Some time since you wrote me expressing a wish to obtain Dr. Emmons volume on the insects when published ~ I sent you the copy, from my own set of the Nat. Hist. yesterday by Express. I will endeavour to procure a copy for you or to replace this one for myself unless you obtain one by other means. I shall of…course have no opinion of the merits of the book, but I should like to hear your opinions. I am sincerely your…” Minute hole in top blank margin, otherwise In very good condition. Dr Emmons is Ebenezer Emmons, 1799-1863, American geologist, educator, and physician. The book Hall sent was: Natural History of New York , Part V, Volume 5 Agriculture, Albany , 1854. James Hall [1811-1898] was an American geologist and paleontologist. He was a noted authority on stratigraphy and had an influential role in the development of American paleontology. In 1850, Hall participated in a geological survey of northern Michigan and Wisconsin where he identified the first fossil reefs ever found in North America .
