James Hall [1811-1898] was an American geologist and paleontologist. He was a noted authority on stratigraphy and had an influential role in the development of American paleontology. In 1850, Hall participated in a geological survey of northern Michigan and Wisconsin where he identified the first fossil reefs ever found in North America .
