For auction is a letter from U.S. President James K. Polk to his Secretary of War, William L. Marcy, inquiring as to the wabouts of the California regiment. Col. J.D. Stevenson, commanding a New York volunteer regiment was to take a rout around the Horn aboard the transport ship Loo-Choo. The regiment (enlisted for the war with the proviso that its members were to be discharged in California at the end of their service) was to come under the command of General Kearny whenever it should reach that distant shore and protect California shores from Mexican occupation.The letter reads as follows: To Hon War S. MarcySir:Have you any information from New York since I saw you on Saturday? Has the California Regiment ( Stephenson's )[sic] gone on board the transport? Have they sailed, and if not who do you ... is the cause of their detention?...James K PolkMonday Sept. 14th 1846 The letter has a wonderfully fancy signature and clear dark ink. It has begun to separate at the original folds and has some age discoloration around the edges of the lined writing paper. A very well preserved piece of history. The photos below clearly show the condition. Bought through a dealer in the 1960's and has been in aprivate collection since. Please email me with questions before youbid.
