Very early mention of the California Gold Mines!Joseph Libbey Folsom ( Folsom St., San Francisco; Folsom, Calif.) Arrived in California in 1847 as Captain and Asst. Quartermaster with the New York Volunteers during the war with Mexico. Shortly after his arrival in San Francisco he was appointed, by Military governor Mason, Collector of the Port.Captain Folsom, having vast reserves of capital at his disposal, began buying town lots in San Francisco and San Jose. In 1849 he located in the Caribbean, the heirs of William Leidesdorff, buying from them, for little compensation, the enormous Leidesdorff San Francisco estate, thereby becoming the largest San Francisco landholder and one of the wealthiest men in California. He died at San Jose at the age of 38 in 1855.This letter, written to his Father at New York City, January 18, 1849, recommends an acquaintance of his, E. A. Suwerkrop, first Danish council to the Hawaiian Islands (1846-48).
