SUPERB and UNUSUAL DESIGN Antique Late 19th - Early 20th C. JAPANESE IMARI Blue & White Hand-Painted Porcelain Bowl. We are offering a wonderful find for the collector of unusual Japanese porcelain! This extraordinary piece is hard to describe because words and pictures don't do it justice. The complex hand-painted design, the cobalt and white colors with a touch of green, and the softly lobed shape all combine to give a mystical, almost etal, quality to the bowl. Clearly, t is some story being told having to do with the dual serpents hovering above the flora below. By weight, this is substantial at just over 2 pounds, but the unique artistry lends it a delicacy not found in more commercial modern pieces often seen for sale. The transparently glazed bowl has a softly sloping lip that follows the lobed shaping, and a short raised foot. The base is recessed and only glazed in the center circular area. It is 9" diameter at the top rim edge, 4 & 3/8" diameter bottom base, and 3 & 1/8" high. No cracks, chips or dings, no restoration. This bowl shows overall usage and age, the glaze on the inside is uniformly worn; it was obviously not a protected cabinet/display piece, but any marks seen in the photos are color and glazing irregularities, scratches, and general wear - NOT damages. All of the pictures were taken in natural light; under artificial light and at night the cobalt tones down to a deeper cobalt, almost navy, blue. I am sorry that I'm not a skilled enough photographer to show how wonderful the contrasting realistic florals, snakes, and bamboo are in counterpoint to the otherwise geometric sections of the design - beautiful. PLEASE take the time to look at all of the photos with the LARGER PICTURE option, because the detail will show much better. This will be sent USPS Priority Mail. Because of changes in the USPS rates, shipping and insurance will be calculated after the auction based on buyer's location and final price.
