DIRECT FROM JAPAN - NO RESERVE PRICE JAPANESE IRON TSUBA MANJU DESIGN DESCRIPTION: This is a fine MOKO GATA a four lobes TSUBA form, made of iron for a KATANA or a WAKIZASHI size, with punch marks and heavy SEKIGANE made of brass inserted in the NAKAGO ANA, and a look of a great strength. It is provided with one HITSU ANA plugged with SAKUDO, an alloy of copper and gold with a raven black patina. The well patined plate is decorated in very fine brass HIRAZOGAN, a low relief inlay with various brocade and basketwork patterns on both sides, damascene in YOSHIRO presentation style, depicting MANJU or swastika design, a regular chinese keyfret pattern symbolic of BUDDHA heart. The detailed carving repeats on the reverse, the plate smoothly polished and the iron of good colour. This tsuba displays all the boldness and strength of the design of YOSHIRO style which it associates with works produced during the GENROKU period, 1688 to 1703, and made as a gift from one DAIMYO to another. The size, quality of inlay, and condition all confirm the excellent craftsmanship characteristic of this period. This piece is in almost perfect condition. Both the iron and the inlay are untouched by age and show great skill. Unsigned work of this quality meant that the TSUBA was made to order in most cases.
