Description: From the forward of the catalog: It is with great pleasure that I introduce our latest exhibition catalogue of Netsuke and Inro from European Collections. During the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult to acquire established collections substantial enough to warrant single exhibitions. Most collectors at present are actively purchasing, and the number of new collectors is testament to the increasing popularity of this area of Japanese art. Thus, for this exercise, I have had to wrestle free a number of smaller collections, and 'raid' others. As a departure from the usual format of categorising the netsuke and Inro into chronological order, or area of carving, I have arranged the pieces within the various collectors' groupings. In this way, one can observe the differing taste of each collector, something I hope you will find as interesting as I do. The exhibition comprises pieces from six collectors: Jacques Carre of Belgium, Dr Strong of London, Dr J. J. Hoerrmann of Stuttgart, and three others, from Germany, Switzerland and England, who have requested anonymity. Jacques Carre is one of the most well-known and respected post-war collectors, whose original collection was exhibited by Eskenazi in 1993. From their sale he purchased back some twenty-five items which are now featured Amongst them are the powerful ivory carving of the coiled dragon, and the tiger and monkey in wood by Tomokazu, the best piece I have ever seen by this artist. Dr Strong was born in London in 1909. He qualified as a doctor in 1932 having trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. After spending two years with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition of 1935--37 on the vessel Discovery IL he emigrated to the then Rhodesia w he set up a medical practice in Bulawayo. During the 1960s he became involved in politics in Rhodesia and was elected Deputy President of the Senate, a position he held until 1979 when he retired to the Cape in South Africa, w he lived until his death in February 2000. He was an inveterate collector with broad horizons. As well as netsuke, he collected snuff bottles, jade, ceramics, Persian carpets and rugs, Georgian silver and drinking glasses. Dr. J.J. Hoerrmann is a medical practitioner in Stuttgart who began collecting in the early 1970s. Amongst his collection are some very fine early pieces, notably the ivory study of the two boys performing a lion dance, and the seventeenth-century merman holding a tama. Also noteworthy is the extraordinary large ivory netsuke of Mitsume Kozo with his long neck folded behind his head.
