HAND CARVED NOH MASK OF KARURA This is a beautiful hand carved wood noh theater mask of the character Karura. This mask retails for over $415. It measures approx. 7"x11". The eyes have a brass overlay.Karura, also known as Garuda in other Asian countries, is a legendary bird. Karura flies in four heavens over Mt. Syumisen, and eatsdragons. Noh Mask making is an 8 stage process.1. The general shape of the mask is roughly cut from wood with a saw and chisel.2. The features are roughed out with chisels.3. Details are carved with fine chisels and the mask is smoothed with sand paper.4. Brass overlay is done on eyes and/or teeth.5. Japanese whitewash is applied to the entire face as a base coat.6. Six applications of face color are applied to the entire face.7.Gold paint is applied to areas such as horns and teeth.8. The fine details are painted and hair is applied.
