In clearing my recently deceased father's estate we discovered this 100% silk prayer flag, carried by almost every Japanese soldier in WWII. These flags were basically farewell presents from family and friends with their sentiments written on the flag for the departing soldier to take with him as he left for the war against the American imperialists. These signed flags are properly called Yosegaki flags. Yosegaki means "gathered writing" in Japanese. I do not know how my dad came upon this item for he served in Europe during WWII, however it is in excellent condition. There are no holes or repairs to the flag. All edges are free of fraying and tattering. The leather and stitching on two of the corners is in mint condition as is the string attached to these features (see photos). This is truly an amazing item.
