This vintage Japanese ax hatchet is made of hand forged tempered iron that holds an edge like nothing made today. Made by a master Japanese master blade maker half a century ago, I picked it up last year while traveling through the old farmlands of Japan. I am told that it was used to cut bamboo though it works great for cutting anything else including kindling. Once lodged into the wood or bamboo one could use it like a wedge pounding on the backside with a heavy hammer pounded against the blunt edge. There is some oxidation (as seen in enlarged photos) and a warm aged patina to the Japanese red oak handle. It is well balanced with a long, heavy blade and a thick handle for a good grip. The ax blade measures 6.25" long (16 cm) by 2" wide (5 cm). The Japanese red oak handle (7.25" overall) is in rustic conditon. Old world craftsmanship for the new world craftsman! Measures 14" (36cm) and weighs 1.25 pounds. About japanpicker, I lived for 10 1/2 years in Japan and currently go back every other month to feed my craving for all things Japanese.
