with St. Paul, Minn. imprint verso, ca 1883. Among a printed list of names on the back-card, this man is identified as Running Deer. Born 1852-53, he was a Mountain Crow and son of Bull Chief. He fasted for a vision three times, and first went to war at the age of 18. Hoop on the Forehead served as a scout for General Crook at the Battle of the Rosebud (1876); with General Gibbon against the Lakota and Cheyenne (1876-1877); with General Howard against the Nez Perce (1877); and with Colonel Miles against the Bannock (1878).Condition: Slight warp to card, otherwise excellent.
