The auction is for a DVD version of the Jean Shepherd classic "Phantom of the Open Hearth." I purchased this DVD on Ebay last year and have viewed it only once. It is in excellent condition. is the details as provided by the seller I originally purchased it from: The DVD at hand is a MEGA RARE 1976 production of "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN HEARTH!" Jean Shepherd both wrote and narrated the TV play Phantom Of The Open Hearth. Set in the 1940s, the story involves the trials and tribulations of Shepherd's alter-ego Ralph. Our Hero would like to escort the beautiful Daphne Bigelow to the junior prom, but instead settles for the comparatively homely Wanda Hickey. Along the way to the inevitable "big dance" denouement, we are treated to such slapstick sidetrips as "the SEARS & ROEBUCK house in a box, the 1st ever leg lamp contest winner (used 7 years later in the classic "A Christmas Story), a riotous softball game and a chaotic contretemps over a movie-house giveaway. Phantom of the Open Hearth was first telecast December 23, 1976. This version is from the 1st ever airing, including the deleted PROM "had too many triples" VOMIT SCENE. PBS eventually deleted the scene finding it a tad bit gross for their audience. This was eventually cut down to 60 minutes. This version clocks in at 76 minutes!!!
