Up for bid is a beautiful model 3429 “Avena” vase designed by Tapio Wirkalla for Iittala glass in 1968. This is the larger 9 ¼” tall version. Like much of Tapio’s glasswork, it was inspired by melting ice. Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was one of the pioneers of Finnish industrial art. While best know for his work in glass, he has made outstanding contributions in, ceramics, metal, wood, lighting, furniture, and graphics. After winning in 1946 a design competition organized by Iittala glass works he became interested in glass. The collaboration with Iittala would last until 1985. In this period he produced over 400 different designs. Some of his most famous are the nature inspired Kantarelli (inspired by the Chanterelle Mushroom), Jakala (inspired by Lichens) and Jaansaro (inspired by an ice block). These are well represented in museums. His Ultima Thule design is one of Finland's most successful glass series of all times. In between the rare museum pieces and the mass produced glassware are hundreds of rare and interesting designs like this vase. These under appreciated treasures are sure to increase in value as more people discover them. The only reference book that completely documents this multitude of different glass designs is “Tapio Wirkkala, eye, hand and thought”. This is an extremely rare and hard to find book but I have a read more
