8x10 stationery headed "from Joseph (Joey) R Smallwood" personally and boldly signed and inscribed "To .... with kindest regards! Joseph R Smallwood." Very minor creasing otherwise in excellent condition. Joseph R Smallwood (1900-1991) spearheaded the drive to bring Newfoundland into Confederation tby becoming the first Premier of Newfoundland. Dubbed Canada's last "Father of Confederation" he remains a controversial and legendary figure on the Rock for ending the island's independence. In 1946 he was elected a delegate of the Newfoundland National Convention. Working tirelessly to bring Newfoundland into Canada, he campaigned for a 'Yes' vote in the 1948 Referendum which he got and which led to his being elected premier of the province in 1949. I have collected autographs for over 30 years and had articles published in the "Autograph Collector" and the UACC's "Pen & Quill." All items and unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic.
