Cotta, 1798, 1799, 1800, 4.75" x 7.75", text in German, rebound in marbled paper covered boards with gilt lettered leather spine labels and all edges dyed yellow, ribbon markers...with 4 plates and 1 foldout plan. The books' covers have a very slight rubbing of corners, a stamp on the versos of the first title page in each volume, some mostly scattered light foxing- heaviest around endpapers, otherwise a very good copy. Quite scarce. A complete 3 year, bound set. The Propyl aen was an art review founded in 1798 by Goethe and his friend Heinrich Meyer. During its short existence of three years, t were published in it, besides the writings of the editors, short contributions by Schiller and Humboldt. Its purpose was to spread sound ideas about the aims and methods of art. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1842), German poet, dramatist and philosopher. The author of the scientific text Theory of Colours , he influenced Darwin with his focus on plant morphology. He also served at length as the Privy Councilor ("Geheimrat") of the duchy of Weimar. Goethe is the originator of the concept of Weltliteratur ("world literature"), having taken great interest in the literatures of England, France, Italy, classical Greece, Persia, Arabic literature, amongst others. His influence on German philosophy is virtually immeasurable, having major effect especially on the generation of Hegel and Schelling, although Goethe himself expressly and decidedly refrained from practicing philosophy in the rarefied sense. Goethe's influence spread across Europe, and for the next century his works were a major source of inspiration in music, drama, poetry and philosophy. Goethe is considered by many to be the most important writer in the German language and one of the most important thinkers in Western culture as well."
