Cotta, 1798, 1799, 1800, 4.75" x 7.75", text in German, rebound in marbled paper covered boards with gilt lettered leather spine labels and all edges dyed yellow, ribbon markers...with 4 plates and 1 foldout plan. The books' covers have a very slight rubbing of corners, a stamp on the versos of the first title page in each volume, some mostly scattered light foxing- heaviest around endpapers, otherwise a very good copy. Quite scarce. A complete 3 year, bound set. The Propyl aen was an art review founded in 1798 by Goethe and his friend Heinrich Meyer. During its short existence of three years, t were published in it, besides the writings of the editors, short contributions by Schiller and Humboldt. Its purpose was to spread sound ideas about the aims and methods of art. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1842), German poet, dramatist and philosopher.
