John Bliss & Co. operated at the Front Street location from the late 1880's until the 1920's. I believe this box is circa 1900-1910. It would have held a chronometer or compass . Night time navigation was made possible with the attached Bartons Burner oil lantern . A close inspection of the plaque (which reads "JOHN BLISS & CO., 128 FRONT STREET, NEW YORK.") reveals a tight grain appearance, possibly bone? Believed to be constructed of walnut, the box measures 8 3/4" high and 8 1/4" wide. The lantern stands about 7 1/2" tall. I will try to answer any questions. USA only.
