In two separate excerpts from his 1994 autobiography, "Take Me Home," John himself said about this experience... "I'd always wanted to go to Alaska. Alaska epitomized for me what it must have been like in the wilderness of the American West before we began to misuse it. Everything that I was hearing about wilderness seemed to have to do with Alaska - man living with nature, not against it; working to survive. Neither the music I was doing nor much of what I took in in general during this period influenced my inner sense of space more fundamentally than seeing Alaska with my own eyes. Through the film we were able to encourage many staff people from the various wilderness preservation organizations to come together in support of the Alaskan Lands Bill, which set aside more land for national parks and wilderness than had previously been set aside in the history of the United States, and quite probably in the world. For that alone, I feel our effort was a success of no small measure." In this film, John travels to Alaska, which as we all know, turned out to be one of his very favorite places on Earth. In 1997, 20 years after this film was made, one of the very last places John visited before he died, was Alaska, w, while staying at the Little Mulchatna Lodge, he completed writing his last song, "Yellowstone, Coming Home," which is included on CD as a FREE BONUS with this auction. In John's 1977 Alaskan adventure, we see him rafting on the Alagnak River, flying above the gorgeous landscape, observing a family of Brown Bears fishing for salmon (a very exciting sequence), observing and photographing beautiful Polar Bears, entertaining the Eskimo people (as JD says, "I reached out and touched the Eskimos in the best way I know how") by performing "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" for them! Much more is covered in this very special documentary which includes four of John's songs: "American Child," "To the Wild Country," "Thank God I'm a Country Boy," and "Whale Bones and Crosses." This experience was, without a doubt, one of the most important events in John's incredible life.
