A Beautifully Modelled and Finely Made Victorian Glass Lion Paperweight after Landeseer's Trafalgar Square Lions, made by John Derbyshire, Marked with His Trademark, and with PODR Diamond Mark, 1870s This is one of the best pieces of pressed glass we have had for a while. The beautifully modelled lion, after Landseer's Trafalgar Square lions, was made by John Derbyshire in the 1870s, his firm marking his products with the initialled anchor mark from 1873-1877. This piece bears the PODR diamond mark also - dating the design to 3 July 1874. The lion is a particularly good example of the use of the pressed glass technique, with the thick flint glass body producing an almost rock crystal like optical effect. This is the larger, straight paw version of the paperweight (the smaller version having crossed paws) The base measures approx 18.3 cm by 10.9 cm and the piece has a max height of approx 12 cm. ( weighs approx 0.929 kg ) It is in very good condition with some slight chipping to the base as shown, not easily seen and not affecting the beauty of this piece, no cracks or restoration.
