This is a rare chance to own an original hand colored early Gould print in very good condition, not a later colored print or reproduction. We will be offering most of the 448 plates, including ALL of Edward Lear's 68 prints. The Birds of Europe, Gould’s second major project is described by Gould expert Susan Hyman as his magnum opus. You are bidding on an ORIGINAL, hand-colored lithograph from JOHN GOULD The Birds Of Europe'. The completed work was incorporated in 5 Volumes with 448 plates from drawings & sketches by Edward Lear John & Elizabeth Gould. Issued in 22 parts, the first appearing on June 1st 1832, the plates were drawn by Gould & Lear. In the prospectus of October 1831 Gould announced that 300 copies would be produced, issued in parts of 25 plates at three monthly intervals for £3 per part. Gould toured Europe with Edward Lear to study specimens, collect information & make drawings, in 1835 Gould went with his wife Elizabeth on another tour of Europe for the same purpose. Edward Lear contributed at least 68 plates, mainly the larger birds producing some of the most striking works of his artistic career. He was also an acclaimed poet & artist in later life. The smaller, pretty, but also most of the duller birds were depicted by Elizabeth Gould from sketches and designs by her husband. It is widely assumed that Lear's collaboration aqnd influence on the work spurred Elizabeth Gould to greater artistic heights. As Isabella Tree notes "in volume Lear's contribution may not have been prolific, but its impact was revelatory. Lear's participation transformed the work of Mrs Gould, which in the Himalayan Birds was little more than a continuation of eighteenth-century productions, into dynamic and expressive works of art. Like an ornithological Michaelangelo he propelled her limited sense of perspective into the third dimension" (Isabella Tree, The Ruling Passion of John Gould (London, 1991), p.43). In his August 1837 preface Gould acknowledged the work of both Lear & Elizabeth Gould but lavished praise on Mr. Bayfield, 'under whose expert direction the plates had been expertly and accurately colored' Gabriel Bayfield (1781-1870), was employed as Gould's primary colourist for 30 years. The quality of Bayfield's work was praised by leading naturalists of the time. Sources cited include Zimmer page 251/252, Maureen Lambourne "Birds of the World", & Susan Hyman "Edward Lear's Birds". This plate was printed by C. Hullmandel. This print is accompanied by its text page. CONDITION: As usual for plates of this age, there are minor blemishes. (SEE PHOTOGRAPH).
