This is an authentic old pottery Irish Whiskey jug from Ireland's oldest distillery founded in 1757. It closed in the 1950's and was later picked up by another distillary, but not with the John Locke name. On the front of the jug is embossed 4/5 Quart, 86.8 Proof Locke's Kilbeggan ( Irish for "little church") Irish Whiskey Distilled by John Locke & Co Ld Kilbeggan Ireland with an Irish girl, a harp, shamrocks, grain, etc. The front shoulder says, Uirse(sp?) Beata. On the back under the handle is " Caution, Our Whiskey When In Jugs and Bottles is Protected by Branded Corks and Patent Capsules, Without Which None is Genuine. Anyone Refilling Our Packages for Trade Purposes Will be Prosecuted." The jug is a thick heavy white glazed stoneware with neck and most of handle dipped in a rusty brown colored slip. There is a separately applied ear handle. The jug measures approx 7 3/4 tall x 3 1/2" across base. The embossing can be felt under the glaze. Unglazed older type bottom. It has its original cork stopper. This jug is in EXCELLENT condition. I do not see any chips, cracks or damage. The jug still has the "Shannon Free Airport" export label on the back, Serial no. 283 55. Also, sealed in a plastic bag attached to the handle, is a gold John Locke label and on the reverse of that is a recipe for Gaelic coffee. Not sure the exact age read more
