There Is A Nice AE1 On The Ancient Coin Altar..Obverse: D N FL CL IVLIANVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped and cuirassed bust rightReverse: SECVRITAS REIPVB, bull standing right with eagle at feet standing on wreath with wreath in beak, two stars above, TCONST in exergueERIC 260, RIC 318T Arelatum Mint (Arles, France) 360-363 A.D. 27.86mm 7.66gThis is a beautiful coin of Julian II, also known as Julian The Apostate. It is a nice issue, and is a denomination we call an AE1. Larger sized. Nice. It has a great patina and some pretty sandy highlights. This coin was holed in antiquity and was likely used as a medallion or amulet. It was struck at the Third Officina of the Arelate Mint, which was being called Constantina at this time. The two stars above the bull are believed by some (me at least) to represent the two halves of the Roman Empire, the East and the West. This coin was struck in the West, and it shows it's Spanish heritage with the bull on it. It is cool! I have a friend who worked as a Torero in a town in Mexico, the bull makes me think of him and his one time dangerous and exciting occupation. Back to bis, though...
