Presented here is a proclamation from Fidel Castro from July 31, 2001, signed by Fidel Castro, the former leader of communist Cuba, and former president Jimmy Carter. Castro rose to power in the late 1950s, wresting power away from the government of Fulgencio Batista. Since then, and until he stepped down in the mid-2000s, Castro implemented a wide range of Marxist-Leninist, anti-globalization, and pro-environment policies meant to turn Cuba into a utopian communist state. Castro, whose legacy is complicated at best, passed away in late 2016 at the age of 90. Carter enjoyed a career as a humanitarian, establishing the Carter Center to expand and advocate for global human rights.This offered proclamation rests inside a brown 19.5-by-27-inch frame on a blue matte. Castro, who considered Carter a friend, penned his flowing signature in blue ink across this proclamation, written in Spanish. A cut below the document offers the translation, "For instituting the youth vanguard that participated in this Educational and Social Revolution which is being carried out by our people and for graduating in the Second Intensive Course of Social Workers."
