This is a very ornate Civil War era leather and brass star martingale with several brass studs around the edges and down the center. It was found in Kentucky and the overall measurements are 22 inches long from the brass ring at the top to the metal fastener at the bottom. The leather measures 17 1/4 inches long x 4 1/2 inches wide at the top tapering to 2 1/4 inches at the bottom. The brass 5-pointed star measures 1 inch wide and the raised brass base measures 1 3/4 inches diameter. The brass studs around the scalloped edges measure 5/8 inches diameter at the top and measure 3/8 inches diameter at the bottom, and the larger brass studs down the center measure 7/8 inches diameter. The brass ring at the top measures 2 1/2 inches diameter. The back of the leather has brass rivets and brass prongs that have been clinched. Condition is very good, t is a brass stud missing above the star, and a brass stud missing at the top left edge, t is wear and cracking to the leather.
