bust depiction with ink embellishments and "Jos: Lyon" inscribed below image. Housed in a giltwood frame with old note on verso inscribed "Silhouette of Joseph Lyon, born about 1750, d. about 1825-30 in Mercer County, Ky. Where he settled prior to 1775. Wife's name was Jane. They were the parents of Stephen Lyon, b. about 1790 - d. 1867 who married Anne McCann Currens and were the parents of my grandfather Joseph Lyon, b. 1827, d. 1854."Circa: Probably fourth quarter 18th century. Condition: Black backing paper replaced, toning to edges, probably from an earlier matte. Frame with minor wear. Size: 6 1/4" x 4" sight, 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" OA. Provenance: Provenance: From the collection of Edward W. Hook, Charlottesville, VA. Catalog Notes: Catalogue Note: This is probably the Joseph Lyon who married Jenny Jane McMillin on May 31, 1784 in Mercer Co. and died in Mason Co. in 1829. Descent from Stephen Lyon (1786-1867) to his third son Joseph (1827-1854) has been established. Joseph was the grandfather of the writer of the attached note.
