This is a very unique item.; It is a Kentucky State Police Challenge Coin.; One side of the coin has Kentucky State Police.; The other side reads courage, commitment and honor.; The challenge coin surfaced during the World War 1 era. The practice of carrying a coin designed specifically for a unit was popular with the Army Special Forces. Carrying the coin at all times and presenting it when challenged to prove affiliation with the unit resulted in a number of consequences for those who could not produce a coin - the most popular required the coinless soldier to buy a round of drinks. That practice continues to be a popular today amoung Police and Firefighting agencies. I think in the KSP the most common consequence is a pop or a meal. Please email with any questions.
