Greetings. You are bidding on the original art for the daily comic strip KERRY DRAKE drawn by the comic strip artist Alfred Andriola . This particular daily features three panels and was published on March 24, (year unknown; the strip has a 50s or early 60s sort of feel to it). The paper size is approximately 19.5” by 6.5”. The strip is signed "Alfred Andriola" and dated "3-24". The art is inscribed "Greetings to Jane Mendoza from Kerry Drake and Alfred Andriola" in red pen or marker above the art. Distributed by Publishers Syndicate (or Publishers Hall Syndicate). The copyright indicia is missing. Description : This is NOT a copy or stat or proof. This is the original art (pen and ink) for the comic strip, drawn by Alfred Andriola (or one of his assistants). Andriola's deft mastery of line and character is on full display as this strip presents a burglary allegedly committed by a monkey (at least that's how the clues look). A nicely rendered and uncommon original comic strip. Character and Artist Information : KERRY DRAKE was an American comic strip which ran from 1943 through 1983. Written for most of that time by Allen Saunders, the strip began with Kerry as an investigator for the DA's office. While initially patterned after the enormously successful Dick Tracy, the strip focused more on solving crimes by clue analysis and police procedures than Chester Gould's death traps and shoot outs. After Kerry's secretary/fiancee was killed, he joined the police force and subsequently tracked down a number of bizarre (in both names and appearances, ala Dick Tracy) villains and criminals. In the 1960s, the focus of the strip shifted to Kerry's brother and the strip adopted more of police soap opera theme after Kerry married a police widow, Mindy, and the two began a family. The strip was reprinted in a Harvey comic book which ran from 1948-52. Alfred Andriola (1912-1983) was an American comic artist and illustrator. He began his career as assistant to Milt Caniff on Terry And The Pirates. He later worked on Charlie Chan and Dan Dunn before his long run on Kerry Drake. Andriola won the Reuben Award for Kerry Drake in 1970 (even though Saunders wrote the strip and much of the art was ghosted, particularly by Sururi Gumen in the later years). Condition : This art is in excellent condition. There are no stats or paste overs. Minor white out corrections to panel edges. Full margins. Minor spots, smudges to art. Zip-a-tone is all intact and glue has not browned. Don’t let this one pass you by. A ‘must” for Drake or Andriola fans, comic book or strip or illustration art collectors, or anyone who appreciates a nicely drawn strip or a classic piece of Americana.
