KING'S ARMS TAVERN During sessions of the General Assembly in the eighteenth century, the overcrowded taverns of the capital of the Virginia colony became social and political centers. The King's Arms Tavern was one of them. Operated in the 1770s by Jane Vobe, it was considered the most "genteel" and was patronized by a select clientele that included George Washington and Revolutionary leader General Thomas Nelson, Jr., of Yorktown. During the American Revolution, Mrs. Vobe supplied food and drink to American troops.
