CONDITION REPORT: This auction is for an Original 1960's Knoll Harry Bertoia Bird Chair & Ottomon, with Polished Steel Rods, and Rare Shade of Pale Vibrant Red Pattern Block Weaved Fabric. Knoll Labeled, Chair Set is in EXCELLENT Structural & Cosmetic Condition. Foam and Shocks are in Great Shape, and so is the original finish. The color of the fabric has faded in a uniformly unique pattern at the edges, and makes for Great Vintage Character. On a scale of 1 to 10; 10 being highest, this set is a SOLID 9.0 Cosmetically. It is truly Stunning, and the uphosltery is in great vintage shape also. T are no messy stains, soilings, rips, tears, pulls, or anything of the sort! In Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." A classic, modern design that enhances any environment, Bertoia's Bird chair remains a fascinating study in bent metal and a fixture of mid-century design. Knoll is the only authorized and licensed manufacturer of the Bertoia Collection which has been in continuous production since 1952. All Inquiries, Email: About Harry Bertoia Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) made a foray into furniture design in the 1950s with Knoll Associates that, while brief, was so powerful and enduring that the royalties alone from his series allowed him to turn his attention to sculpture for the rest of his life. Born in Italy, Bertoia moved with his parents to America in 1930 and he attended Cass Technical High School in Detroit. On a scholarship, he went to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1937. When he started, he concentrated on printmaking and drawing, selling his work through a gallery in New York. In 1939 he established a metalworking and jewelry studio t and became head of the department, remaining in the position until 1943. While at Cranbrook, Bertoia began a relationship with his colleagues, Charles and Ray Eames, that would extend into a complex working relationship. Bertoia married Brigitta Valentines and joined the Eames in their California studio in 1943. They were involved in a wartime project for the Evans Product Company, providing technical work for airplane and medical equipment. Bertoia was also drawing training manuals. At this point they began to experiment with molded plywood under the auspices of their Plyformed Products Company, which was later bought out by Evans. With Eero Saarinen they developed a method for making molded plywood splints that would later evolve into processes for designing furniture.
