ITEM 0018731 EQ Kollsman Type MA-1 Military (USAF) Sextant with padded case This item is in exceptionally good condition. The data plate says it's a "SEXTANT, MIRROR HORIZON, two power magnification with variable time integrator. Type MA-1. The padded OD case has one loose strap end that requires re-sewing; otherwise, it is in good serviceable condition with lots of internal padding to protect the instrument. T is a small vial with two spare bulbs (plus two in the sextant). The sextant has an excellent black wrinkle-finish with no dings or visible damage. All switches, knobs and dials turn and operate smoothly. The foam cover around the eyepiece is soft and flexible. The "Amphenol" plug has the following stamped on it: AN3106A ٠ 126 ٠ 3P. The instrument is powered by 28 volt AC or DC. I have not added power so I cannot tell you if it operates. The data plate indicates it was built to Specification MIL-S-9391 and the Mfr part no is 1972-02, leading one to believe that could be its date of manufacture. It has USAF Stock No 6225-1972-02 and serial number 513. It was made by the Kollsman Instrument Corporation. T is a paper inspection sticker from OKCAMA (Oklahoma City AMA) dated 2 Sep 1980. I'll do my best to explain all the controls: Even without power, when looking through the adjustable eyepiece I can see lighted shapes (eg an overhead light). Above this eyepiece is a small light-colored knob with an arrow on it. It turns freely but doesn't seem to do anything. (see newly added front view picture) In the center top area, above the power plug, is an oval glass with what appears to be a type of lens assembly inside. T is a small spring visible low on the left side. On the left side of the instrument just above the strap is a large bakelite knob with numbers 1 through 0. It turns with a solid "clicking" sound, but also doesn't seem to do anything when turned. Next to it is a sight glass with what appears to be dessicant or crystals inside. On the opposite side of the instrument is a large round dial that turns large and small numbers in a small rectangular window immediately behind the dial. Above that window is a larger rectangular window with a dial on one side (currently at "0") and a pair of wheels with 3/16" white marks on them. A horizontal datum line runs across the center of this window. (see newly added picture of this area) I cannot power up this instrument, so possibly t would be more "activity" were I able do so. I added more pictures of the carrying bag. It is a serious piece of work. The zipper appears to be waterproof because when closed, it's buried under a rubber cover situated along each side of the zipper.
