Description This 3D mixed media artwork pays tribute to Kurt Cobain, best known as front man for the grunge music band Nirvana. In it the tragedy of his life and death has been explored by the artist, Alan Derrick. ARTIST STATEMENT I chose to depict Kurt Cobain with the expression of pain and suffering that accompanied his life because of the tragedy of his death. His professional career spanned the late 80's and early 90's. He is credited with popularizing the grunge movement and came to symbolize the Generation X lifestyle. He struggled with drug addiction, illness, and depression in the later years of his life and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1994 at the age of 27 joining the infamous "27 Club". When I was finished with this artwork and stepped back to see it for the first time, I was shocked to see a perfect likeness of Jesus Christ. Go figure. TECHNIQUE This 3D pop artwork features layers of intricately cut steel mounted over a floating panel. The artist introduces visual depth to the piece by allowing each suspended layer to cast a shadow over the next. It is hand painted and signed by the artist to closely match the example pictured.
