A great Original silver gelatin process Huffman Photograph on heavy photographic paper done by the Huffman Studio from the Original Plates done by Huffman. This image is 8" by 10" with Huffman Studio Stamp on the back. It is labeled on the lower portion of the image - " THE FIRST MONUMENT on CUSTER'S HILL 1877 ", and the plate is signed on the lower right "(C) L.A. Huffman". L.A. HUFFMAN was a U.S. Army Post Photographer at Fort Keogh (Miles City, Montana) when the post was opened in 1876 following the Custer Battle in June of the same year. He photographed the Indian Warriors, the Soldiers, The Buffalo Hunters, The Bull-Wackers, The Old people of Miles-town (the present day Miles City, Montana) and Cattleman of the Area. He made his photographs on glass plates. His work dates from 1878 to 1920. A mission was organized to gather as many of the horse bones as possible. Even though orders did not require as such, the men did their best to make the field more presentable. And, they built the first monument to the fallen soldiers. It was written in an official report , - "We accordingly built a mound out of cord wood filled in the center with all the horse bones we could find on the field.
