In 1965, a company named “Algar Enterprises” obtained sole importation rights for Lancia Automobiles to the United States from the Lancia factory in Torino. Lancia cars had not been officially sold in the US since 1962, when Lancia’s deal with Max Hoffman had expired. Lancia was extremely hopeful about their new American partnership. For the 1965 New York International Auto Show, the factory produced THREE deluxe paint sample portfolios, consisting of a complete set of paint and leather samples for all Lancia cars then available. These three portfolios were delivered by a factory courier in person to Algar Enterprises in advance of the show, and they remained in the hands of Algar until my father acquired all of the Lancia-related books, manuals and paper items directly from Algar in 1972. The company had been forced to stop importing cars in 1968, when the US certification restrictions for foreign vehicles was changed, but they kept selling new parts until 1972. The portfolio offered is one of these three portfolios, it was given as a gift by my father to a collector in California in 1975, he recently died, and we re-purchased the portfolio.
