If you'd like to see some of the others, please * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Historic Federal Land Grant Relating ToService in the War of 1812 ***** Signed President James Buchanan (presumably by His Secretary) ***** for Land Awarded to Joel Woods Veteran of a Tennessee Regiment ***** - 1858 - ***** This is a fantastic piece of history associated with the War of 1812, a parchment (or parchment-like paper) document signed "James Buchanan," President of the United States (presumably signed on behalf of the President by his Secretary, T. J. Albright, who also signed for himself, as did the Recorder of the General Land Office, John N. Granger). Up in the left corner of this document is an imprint of the American flag, and in the lower left corner a paper seal. This is a federal Land Grant, dated September 10, 1858, relating to 80 acres of land that had been awarded to a former soldier for service in the Was of 1812. The land in question was described as being located upon "the West half of the North West quarter of Section Fifteen, in Township Seventeen, North of Range Ten, East, in the District of lands subject to sale at Stevens Point, Wisconsin, containing eighty acres." This is a partially printed form, with much of the information filled in by hand, conveying to "George Knowles" a tract of land originally awarded to Joel Woods. It is noted in this document that Woods was a "Private, Captain Tipton’s Company, Tennessee Militia, War of 1812." Background : Joel Woods was a private who served under Major John Chiles and Captain Reuben Tipton in the "East Tennessee Mounted Gunmen." Notes Apparently Chiles’ outfit was known by several names, including "Chiles' Battalion, Mounted Gunmen, East Tennessee Volunteers" and also "Chiles' Battalion, East Tennessee Mounted Infantry Volunteers." Captain Reuben Tipton had been born in 1782 in Shenandoah County, Virginia and died c. 1837 in Knoxville, Tennessee. This battalion served from September 1814 to May 1815 and its company commanders were Captains Charles Conway, James Cumming, Daniel Price, Jehu Stephens and Ruben Tipton. This battalion was part of an expedition led by Major Uriah Blue (39th U.S. Infantry) which was sent into West Florida in December 1814 to search for Creek warriors who had escaped Andrew Jackson's capture of Pensacola. Toward the end of the war they were positioned near Baton Rouge, waiting to be sent to fight in the New Orleans campaign, but the war was over before their service was called upon. (Although I had done a little preliminary research on this historic document, it needs a great deal more research than I have had time to give it.) At any rate, this is a very historic document, bridging the period from the War of 1812 to the period just before the Civil War, a conflict many feel was partly the result of the actions (and inaction) of the president whose name is on this document. This item is guaranteed ORIGINAL – IT IS GENUINE, NOT A "REPRO" OF ANY SORT! It was written and signed 153 years ago, just three years before the Civil War began, and is guaranteed genuine. This document measures 16 inches wide by 10 inches high and its condition is quite good. Overall it is very nice and will make a great display piece! I’m a longtime collector, not a dealer, and over the past 45 years I have collected a great variety of historical memorabilia.
