A handsome First Edition of this scarce and interesting large book, lavishly illustrated throughout. Published more than 20 years ago, this book is now out of print and quite scarce. Such a nice First Edition is not likely to come up for sale again soon on ebay. From the Dust Jacket: "From its founding nearly three centuries ago on the frontier of colonial Maryland to today's thriving suburbs on the edge of the nation's capital, Prince George's County, Maryland, has played a significant role in regional and American history. Among the visible records of the history is the county's rich architectural legacy, including more than 250 sites designated as county landmarks and sixty listed to the National Register of Historic Places. Landmarks of Prince George's County brings together 125 photographs by Jack E. Boucher, chief photographer for the National Park Service's Historic American Building Survey (U.S. Depeartment fot he Interior), the nation's oldest federal preservation program and one long regarded as setting the national standard for architectural documentation. This book is an outgrowth of a unique cooperative project between the Historic American Buildigns Survey and Prince George's Count to document the county's historic resources. Features are a wide range of buildings, from historic houses to chuches, schools, and commercial and agricultural structures. Residences include the ruins of early eighteenth-century Want Water, the grand Federal style Montpelier, and exuberant Queen Anne suburban dwellings from the turn of this century. Here also are John Coffren's store in rural Croom, built in 1851 and virtually intact both inside and ou, and Hyattsville Hardware, a typical late nineteenth century urban business. Among the many churches shown is the oldest surviving in the couty, St. Paul's Episcopal in Baden, constructed in 1735. A pair of barns near Mitchellville---one antebellum, the other late Victorian--reflect the region's post--Civil War shift from tobacco to livestock and fodder crops. The Victorian B&O Railroad Station in Laurel, built in 1884, is the county's only surviving historic railroad station. And Greenbelt Center Elementary School, a striking 1937 Art Deco structure featuring has reliefs by WPA artist Lenore Thomas, recalls an era when the federal government played an active role in innovative urban planning." From the Foreword: "By celebrating some of Prince George's County's most important historic propertise, this book anticipates the 1996 tricentennial of the county's founding Prince George's County has seen great changes over the last three hundred years, from seventeenth-century settlements clustered along the major waterways to a sophisticated plantation society made prosperous by the production of tobacco. After the Civil War, small farms and local commerce became the dominant occupations, but by the mid-twentieth century Prince George's County had become part of the expanding metropolitan area of Washington, D.C. Despite the extent of changes that have ocurred, in many areas of the county Prince Georgians can walk along the creeks and rivers of the county's extensive park system and glimpse the rural character that the first settlers saw more than three hundred years ago.
