You will be bidding on this attractive piece of petrified wood from North Dakota. Petrified wood is a type of fossil: it consists of fossil wood w all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals (most often a silicate, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrification process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals in the tree's cell and as its lignin and cellulose decay away, a stone cast forms in its place. Minerals such as manganese, iron, and copper in the sediment during the petrification process give petrified wood a variety of colors. Petrified wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail, down to the microscopic level. Petrified wood is found in several areas of the U.S as well as Argentina, Australia, Czech Republic, and Greece. This piece has been pressure washed with water only and measures about 23 in. x 11 in. x 18 in. and weighs about 119 pounds. Please visit my store for many affordable beautiful specimens.
