This is a very large and rare example of circa 1900 Chimayo weaving art. The weave is hand spun, single ply yarn on a machine warp foundation. It has very fine weave and a soft hand, much softer than Navajo.It measures 6''10" by 4' 1/2" (82" by "48 1/2") and features light desert southwest earth tones.Descended from the original churro sheep that came to New Mexico with the Coronado Expedition in 1540, the New Mexican churro sheep became an important part of the Spanish colony's economy. Their wool became an important part of the survival of the settlers who came to the Northern Rio Grande Valley in what is now Chimayo, New Mexico. In those days Chimayo and the surrounding area were the last frontier of New Spain. Unprocessed wool was too difficult and expensive to transport to urban markets. Blankets, however, were in great demand, and by 1840 weavings were routinely traded out of New Mexico. There were also an important domestic good, to ward off the cold of mountain nights and as a wearing blanket.The most prized type of weaving during these early years called the Rio Grande blanket, of which this is an example from around the turn of the last century.
