In today's economy, antique prints are still appreciating in value and are considered a sound investment. Large H/C Mushroom Lithograph British Mycology Pl. XXXII 1847 Description This is a lovely hand colored, watercolor lithograph, Bulgaria Inquinans, from Illustrations of British Mycology, containing Figures and Descriptions of the Funguses of Interest and Novelty Indigenous to Britain. This two volume work by Anna Maria Hussey (1805-1877) also called Mrs. Thomas Jonathan Hussey, was published in London, 1847 by Reeve Brothers. The book was an expensive undertaking and the color plates were of morals, fungi, truffles and puffballs. Each illustration was accompanied by botanical information and general commentary. The book was intended as a popular work suitable for the drawing room rather than a scientific book. Hussey was a very talented British artist, writer and mycologist who was the wife of a cleric. She lived in the country and collected fungi near her home in Kent. The 87 beautiful mushroom lithographs were printed on heavy stock paper and the drawings and colors are outstanding. Plate XXXII, Bulgaria Inquinans (Pitch-black Bulgaria) is an odd mushroom reminiscent of black gumdrops with scaly brown shells. It grows on branches of the bark of dead oak and Hornbeam trees .
