This unique walking stick, hand made by blacksmith Brian Otto, features a bearded tomahawk head and a custom-shaped short point spike. Often called Fokos or Valaska, this hand-forged tool was traditionally used by people in Hungary and areas of Eastern Europe. The 8 3/4" tomahawk head is composed of 4140 steel bar stock. After being hand forged, the tomahawk head was hardened and tempered using a 5 hour process. While time consuming, this process is used because it relieves brittleness and retains more of the hardness than commonly used, faster tempering processes. Using this process produces a blade that holds an edge well. The langets are riveted to the handle and extend all the way up through the head - secured with nuts on top. (See photos for example of how the langets are constructed.) This strengthens the connection of the steel head and wooden handle. Although quite labor intensive to create, the langets are worth it because they also add to the appearance and balance of this Valaska. The steel reinforced point on the bottom of the walking stick serves to improve traction - whether it be in dirt, sand, or on slick surfaces. (See photos of how the langets are constructed.) The extra-thick hickory handle is absolutely beautiful and well suited for larger hands. It was designed and hand-crafted specifically for this head to enhance its beauty and balance. The wood has been stained dark and waxed for beauty and durability. Dimensions: The cutting edge is 5 5/8" (straight measurement tip to tip). The distance from the handle to the cutting edge is 4 3/4". The distance from the spike to the handle is 2 3/4". Total length including handle and bottom tip is 41 1/2". Total weight without case is 3 pounds 5 ounces. The leather blade sheath was designed and hand-crafted for this specific tomahawk to fit is like a glove. The thick quality leather has been glued, hand-sewn, stained, and given a water-resistant finish for durability as well as beauty. Solid copper rivets were added to the sheath for extra strength. While the superior craftsmanship of this Fokos makes it beautiful enough to display, you will want to carry it with you on all your outdoor excursions.
