Connelly, Secretary to the President,on White House stationery, dated February 7, 1949 (18 days after Truman's inauguration): "My dear Mr. Gardner: I am returning with the photograph which you enclosed with your letter of January eighteenth, addressed to Mr. Ross. The President was pleased to autograph it for you." Charlie Ross was Truman's Press Secretary.THIS WAS NOT A PHOTOGRAPH SENT OUT BY THE WHITE HOUSE.HY GARDNER SENT IT TO THE WHITE HOUSE FOR SIGNING. This letter had been affixed to the back of the photograph with scotch tape resulting in tape remnants at the perimeter of this letter and on the back of the photograph. President Truman had a day full of meetings on February 7, 1949, the date of his secretary's letter. At 10:00 A.M. he met with the "Big 4": Vice President Alben W. Barkley (pictured in this photograph with President Truman), Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, Senate Majority Leader Scott Lucas (D-Illinois) and House Majority Leader, Congressman John W. McCormack (D-Massachusetts). At 12:00 P.M., he met with Congressman Richard Bolling of Missouri to discuss the Postmastership at Kansas City. At 12:30 P.M., he met with Secretary of State Dean Acheson for his usual Monday appointment. At 1:00 P.M., he had lunch with his cabinet.
