LARGE UNIQUE 18TH CENTURY DUTCH 5-LAYER A-SPEO CHEVRON GLASS TRADE BEAD You have to hold this one-of-a-kind bead in your hand to truly appreciate it. First, it's in excellent condition for its age, with the minor dings you might expect, a not -uncommon hairline fracture in the clear outer layer, and superb patina. Around the perforation, fore and aft, the bead has been worn slightly concave by its proxi mity to equally large, round beads , very likely other Dutch chevrons. Centuries of wear ~ and possibly an early owner's alteration ~ have smoothe d away the glass on two sides until the clear layer is gone, as well as the red and blue stripes, and much of the white layer. The effect is stunning. My photos don't begin to show just how special this bead really is. From the center, the layers are brick red, white, brick red, white with 12 alternating incised stripes of red and blue, and clear. The bead measures 11-12.5mm in length, 19mm at its widest diameter and 15mm at its narrowest.
