Up for auction here is a large wood slick primarily intended for doing post and beam type work. The actual steel slick measures 3 1/8" wide and 15" long. With the handle in place the whole thing is about 29" long and weighs a little over 4 pounds. The steel is inscribed with: I.P. WOOD and C.W.H. WOOD which I believe means it was made in Pompey, NY somewhere in the mid-1800's. See the notes I found below regarding this. The other marking on the slick is R.B. DEAN, but I can't find any information about that. Perhaps he was the tool's original owner. Other than maybe needing to touch up the blade, this tool is ready to get back into beam production so good luck bidding! Snipet I found on the web: >>According to the 1860 census, C. W. H. (as he was known) and Albert werestill living with their parents in Pompey, which is a small town nearSyracuse. Both Ira and C. W. H. are listed as "Edge Tool Makers" andAlbert is listed as a "Journeyman Painter."An 1860 map of Pompey contains an I. P. Wood Edge Tool Factory innorthern Pompey. In the 1870 census, C. W. H. is still living in Pompey and is stilllisted as an "Edge Tool Maker." Albert has moved to Syracuse and islisted as a "Salt Inspector" (Syracuse is known as "Salt City" and wasfamous for its salt). I have not found a listing for Ira or HarrietWood in 1870.<<
