Beautifully carved of fine grained ivory, this bust on cylindrical pedestal depicts the Greek god Achilles. A winged dragon embellishes his helmet and holds the grand plume across his back. Two writhing snakes adorn the visor of his helmet. This magnificent helmet is the crowning glory for a legendary warrior. Achilles was the son of the mortal Peleus and the Nereid Thetis. He was the mightiest of the Greeks who fought in the Trojan War, and was the hero of Homer's Iliad. This carving is very high quality with fine detail to Achilles' eyes, nose, curled hair and the feathers on his helmet. Height: 7 inches (17.5 cm), Width: 2 1/4 inches (5.5 cm) Condition is very good. Nice old patina and cross-graining . Beautiful fine carving of genuine elephant ivory.
