Condition Grade: Excellent Vintage circa 1936/37 photogravure by the famous and controversial cinematographer/photographer Leni Riefenstahl. Photographically, Riefenstahl was renown for the artistry and atmosp she infused into her imagery. These images were created at the height of Riefenstahl's career and fame during her award winning cinematic/photographic production of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, hosted by then Nazi Germany. These dramatic images capture high jumpers Dave Albritton and Delos Thurber of the U.S.A.. Albritton won the Silver and Thurber the Bronze in the high jump for the United States. The American team swept the High Jump event winning the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Historic in several regards , the gravure prints themselves are from a rare bound photogravure printing of Riefenstahl images published by Deutschen Verlag in Germany in 1937, just after the Olympic Games and one year before the release of her controversial, internationally acclaimed film "Olympia" in 1938. About the artist: LENI RIEFENSTAHL was born in Berlin in 1902. She studied painting and started her artistic career as a dancer. Soon after she became involved in motion pictures first as an actress and then as a director/filmmaker. She was and is compared with the greatest film artists in history but, her life and career have been overshadowed by her associations with Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich in Nazi Germany. Her film artistry reached its zenith with the 1936 Olympic Games documentary entitled "Olympia". This now legendary film won huge international and critical acclaim including the gold medal in Paris in 1937, first place in Venice as the world's best film in 1938, the Olympic Award by the IOC in 1939, and in 1956 it had been classified as one of the world's best ten films. To this day "Olympia" is arguably considered to be the best sport/athletics documentary film ever made.Although after the war Riefenstahl was found innocent of any war crimes, she was essentially blackballed for much of her life and it wasn't until the 1960's when the international public began to accept her back into the artistic world with her photographic studies of the Nuba tribe in Africa. While her African Nuba work received critical applause and acceptance, she never again approached the levels of artistic greatness she achieved with Olympia.
