Leslie Moffat Ward RE etching 'La Dama da Elche' For Sale: 'La Dama da Elche', an etching by the artist Leslie Moffat Ward. A 'portrait' of the archaelogically significant Iberian stone bust, dated from the 4th Century BC, of a young woman adorned with an elaborate headdress characterised by the ornate wheel-like 'rodettes' that project forwards from over the subject's ears. The heavier and more detailed inscription of the elegant features of the sculpture's face and its delightful headware denote them not only as focal points of interest for the viewer, but also indicate the deferential focus of the artist in his creation of the matrix. Through the etching medium the artiist has created an aesthetic that undoubtedly embellishes the impression of the subject's age and cultural heritage. The artist's monogram, the name, estimated age and location of the subject, as well as a date, '56' (1956) are all inscribed within the plate towards the bottom right. Additionally the artist has signed, annotated and dated the print, '56', in pencil. Artist Biography Leslie Moffat Ward (b.1888-d.1978) Born in Worcester, UK, on 2nd April 1888, Ward moved to what was to be his life long home of Bournemouth in 1895, where he would continually draw artistic inspiration from his local neighbourhood and the surrounding area. He trained at the Drummond Road Art School, where he later became a teacher, and exhibited extensively in the first half of the 20th Century, including at the Royal Academy. He was elected an associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (since 1991 the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) in 1916 and became a full member in 1936. Although a capable painter, Ward is primarily known as an innovative print maker who utilised a variety of techniques and mediums. These include etching, lithography, woodcuts and most notably screen prints of which Ward is considered to be a pioneer. Amongst his work that encompassed rural landscapes, urban and industrial scenes as well as figurative subjects, the docks, warehouses and landscapes of the area around Poole feature prominently in the artist's body of work and for this reason his name is always associated with Dorset. However, Ward also specialised in the landscapes of Southern England, and was a significant painter of the human form. In all his work he demonstrated an underlying objectivity, creating an ideal balance between light and colour in his compositions.
