Leslie Moffat Ward RE etching 'Snow at Boston' For Sale: 'Snow at Boston', an etching created by the artist Leslie Moffat Ward. A detailed and heavily inscribed study of a snow covered urban dwelling backing onto the river in Boston, UK. In depicting the manner in which light catchs the various architecturul surfaces particularly, the artist has utilised the medium in way akin to block shading with varying densities of symmetrical, intersecting lines representing light and shadow respectively. The artist's initials and surname are present within plate near the bottom edge of the image. The title has been inscribed within the border at the base of the print. Artist Biography Leslie Moffat Ward (b.1888-d.1978) Born in Worcester, UK, on 2nd April 1888, Ward moved to what was to be his life long home of Bournemouth in 1895, where he would continually draw artistic inspiration from his local neighbourhood and the surrounding area. He trained at the Drummond Road Art School, where he later became a teacher, and exhibited extensively in the first half of the 20th Century, including at the Royal Academy. He was elected an associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (since 1991 the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) in 1916 and became a full member in 1936. Although a capable painter, Ward is primarily known as an innovative print maker who utilised a variety of techniques and mediums. These include etching, lithography, woodcuts and most notably screen prints of which Ward is considered to be a pioneer. Amongst his work that encompassed rural landscapes, urban and industrial scenes as well as figurative subjects, the docks, warehouses and landscapes of the area around Poole feature prominently in the artist's body of work and for this reason his name is always associated with Dorset. However, Ward also specialised in the landscapes of Southern England, and was a significant painter of the human form. In all his work he demonstrated an underlying objectivity, creating an ideal balance between light and colour in his compositions.
