Letter from the Ordnance Office, Book and Blank Division, War Department, Washington, D.C. to Lieutenant John P. Swisher commanding Co. "A" Detachment 36th Indiana Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, IV Corps, 23 September 1864, a long list of books, forms and pamphlets, the ones sent to Swisher being checked off, signed in type by Brigadier General George D. Ramsay, 10 x 8. In very good condition, scattered soiling, collector's pencil notations on front and back. John P. Swisher began his Civil War service as a Corporal in the 36th Indiana Infantry and rose to Captain of Company "A." The 36th, originally led by Colonel William Grose fought with the Army of the Ohio and later in the IV Corps of the Army of the Cumberland at Shiloh (where they were the first regiment of Buell's Army to arrive on the first day's field, 6 April 1862), at Perryville, Stones' River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and the Atlanta Campaign. Swisher then led Company "A" also known as "Detachment A" of the 36th Indiana Infantry at Franklin and Nashville.
